---for Bri / Athena c:
It was hot out. Way too hot for almost anyone, and beyond that, resources such as food or precious water, were dwindling entirely too quickly. To make matters worse, from what he had heard, the problem seemed to be plaguing all of the packs in the area, making any search for water or food beyond the borders of the Vertok likely to be a fruitless undertaking. The thought of even engaging in such an effort seemed downright silly; a waste of time and energy. Simply following through with regular duties was becoming more and more challenging. The Knight had found himself spending more time in the caves than he usually did, a fact Hawk was not particularly fond of. However, they were about the only shelter to be had from the relentless sun and heat. Deep within the caves, where the rocks and terrain were not exposed to all of those elements, some of the caves were still cool enough to find some shelter and relief from the horrendous conditions outside, and it had gotten him wondering - was it possible that one of the caves might have water in it? If he had heard correctly, a great many of the passages beneath their home were not fully explored, so the possibility seemed reasonable. Although the caves were most certainly not his preferred place, the thought of spending an excessive amount of time outside now seemed far more unpleasant. Exploring the caves would keep him cooler, and with the possibility of a good pay-off, it seemed like the best thing Hawk could try to do, to help his pack through these troubling times. Of course, though, exploring them alone was not the best idea. The ghost was thankful to have made a pair of friends in recent weeks, one of whom had agreed to accompany him. Though he despised having to venture out into the heat, Hawk would eventually do so, making his way to the place Athena and Maxem had shown him weeks ago, after the latter’s dangerous accident. It was there Athena had agreed to meet him, so they could then discuss where to begin the expedition. Hawk didn’t bother to try to disguise his steps as he approached the area, panting from the heat, though his eyes scanned the nearby forest to see if Athena might’ve already beaten him there. Her darker fur would quite likely make the sun and heat all the more unpleasant, and he didn’t wish to keep her waiting for long if so.

The heat was unbearable. It was so bad that it made Athena long for the shelter of the caves. It seemed hotter than all the other summers she had endured, it made her want to go live in a river-though that was impossible as well. She had tried to venture down for a swim, but to her dismay it had receded to barely a trickle and the muddy banks were long dried and cracked from the sun. Bodies of fish had littered the areas they had been trapped in and it made Athena's heart sink. Was there a chance that her pack could end up like these fish? Despite her concerns she had kept a steady face, not wanting to worry her other pack members. There was no helping a pack if it was reduced to chaos.
She wracked her brain for solutions, but they all came back to the idea of searching deep within in the caves, though picture herself wandering deeper and possibly getting lost or trapped in a cave in made her heart feel like it was being squeezed by a vice until one day she couldn't take it much longer and walked into the cave system though she didn't make it far.
Within those caves she felt like her senses were nonexistent and it made her heart rate spike like a rabbits in chase. She was rooted there, staring with wide eyes until something whispered run in her ears and she turned, running out of those dark passage ways and into the forest, ignoring the looks of a few pack members, who were no doubt wondering what had spooked the smokey maid. She had high tailed it back to the clearing that she and Maxem treated like a second home-one they had opened to a new friend-and settled down next to the log, catching her breath. She had just steadied her lungs when their friend had appeared, asking for assistance in exploring the very areas she had run from in search for water. She had failed in this task but had been alone, maybe with Hawk by her side she would be able to manage, so she had agreed and now, on a new day, she was sitting next to the log and waiting for the ghostly fellow to appear.
She heard him before she saw him, tilting her head and her gaze landing upon him. "So," she started, "we're really doing this huh?" She asked, rising to her paws. The caves made her stomach churn, but she pushed it away. This was for pack and though their King and Queen were calling a meeting with the other pack leaders, Athena didn't want to pass on any chance that the pack could stay self sufficient.
But you see, it's not me, it's not my family In your head, in your head, they are fightin'

It did not take too long before the other revealed herself, rising from where she’d been resting. Of course, she had beat him here, Hawk thought - it felt ridiculous to expect otherwise from the duteous Athena. She did not spare one second before starting things off with a question, incredibly to the point, as he’d come to expect from his packmate. She had remained what Hawk believed was her typical self for the pack, a dutiful individual, not letting the strain of recent events show on her countenance - as he’d tried to do as well.
”Miss Athena,” he offered for a greeting, along with a small bow, before he then moved to stand under the limited shade provided by a nearby tree. ”Yes. I do not think.. we can afford not to at least try, at this point.” She didn’t sound too enthused about the upcoming exploration, and neither was he. Sure, sticking to the caves the Vertok pack knew and frequented was easy enough. But venturing into some dark, potentially cramped, twisting and winding tunnels that nobody knew anything about?
That was a different game entirely. A risky one, at that. And yet, the lack of water drove them to it - for if there was anything to be found, the efforts would undoubtedly be worth it. Hawk had attempted a few expeditions on his own prior to this, but he’d never been able to push himself very far. Not until more recently, that was. And now, with the leaders being forced to call a meeting with the other packs, it seemed more important than ever to keep trying.
If the Vertok could locate an underground water source, that would give them an advantage, in the event the other packs were not cooperative. If things went well though, perhaps they could share it, and the find would be something that could possibly unite everyone - but that was a decision to be discussed at a different time. Assuming he and Athena even located anything, that was.
”Unless you have a better idea, I thought perhaps.. we would start with caves that are at the lowest points in our territory, or that slope down. Since water.. uh, flows down, if we’re going to have a shot at finding any, it seems like that’s what we ought to do.” It seemed an incredibly obvious revelation that somehow he’d overlooked until just recently, but it was the closest thing he had to a plan.
If his packmate had any better suggestions though, the ghost was certainly eager to hear them.

Athena felt her heart shrink like the drying grasses around them as he confirmed her thoughts. She started to feel like the prey that their noble Rooks-some so skilled they never missed their target-except her predator were those caves, gaping with open maws. She couldn't fathom how some pack mates loved those dark and cramped spaces-they raced, explored, slept peacefully in them and these things made the grey she wolf feel like even more like she didn't belong. Perhaps, being able to push through her fears and find water Athena would be able to prove that she belonged within this pack. She wasn't a traitor like her father and brother.
"Unfortunately not." She said with a heavy sigh, wishing she could think of something else they could do to find water, but they also couldn't waste time. As the days had past with less water and more sun she had began to see a strain start to take hold on the pack. Yes their environment was drying out-trees were dropping their needles prematurely-but that wasn't the thing that worried her most. Instead of scampering about and filling the air with excited yips and squeals the pups were piled in whatever cool spot they could find, the Rooks-as skilled as they were-were out longer and longer each day in search of prey and though they brought something back each time it was becoming obvious that other creatures were suffering from this drought.
Athena silenced her thoughts as Hawk spoke, he had a good idea and she was willing to follow his lead. "We can start there then," she agreed and rose to her paws, "we might as well start now and get this over with," she said with a rueful smile, "the caves aren't my favorite place to be." She added, not wanting him to think she was so unhappy about this because they were working together. Frankly it was the opposite, she couldn't put her nose to it, but there was something about her new friend that made her feel at ease, sure Maxem was her friend, but he wasn't the type that gave off a strong aura, he was the happy go lucky one, and Hawk? Well, Athena found herself relating a bit more to him, she couldn't pick another wolf she would be willing to go through with though. If something were to go wrong she had a feeling that Hawk would be able to pull through and she believed that she could do the same for him.
But you see, it's not me, it's not my family In your head, in your head, they are fightin'

It was unfortunate, the ghost thought, that the same sort of trouble that had plagued his homelands and caused him to separate from all of his family, had followed him here. Hawk hoped it hadn’t followed him here. If he was somehow cursed and had brought this fate upon everyone in the area. He found himself praying, more often than not, to whatever spirits were out there - that water would return, and that this would not cost him his new family and friends. Drought and lack of food were already taking their toll, and Hawk feared for the pups and the elderly of the Vertok. He’d been skimping on meals, consuming only the absolute minimum to keep going, but the dull ache of hunger was still there. If anything, maybe exploring the caves would distract him from that, temporarily at least.
Athena, in spite of her reservations, agreed that they did not really seem to have a choice, and he offered her what he hoped was an encouraging little smile. Additionally, the grey female agreed to start with some of the lower caves. She rose almost immediately, expressing a desire to get started, so it could be over with sooner.
”It might take... days to thoroughly search everything. But, yeah. I saw a couple a little further down.. that way, a few days ago-” at that, the ghost turned to point with his muzzle in the direction he recalled, ”-which I think we could start with. If there’re any other places you know, though.. we could go there, too.” Living here as long as she had, the other probably knew about more nooks and secret caves than he had. Hawk had spent a fair amount of time exploring and mapping Vertok territory as he could, but duties hadn’t allowed him to get to all of that.
”So you know, um... I'm glad, it's you, that's coming with me. I believe we'll get through this.” Both their expedition, and hopefully, the drought, one way or another. He hadn’t known Athena very long, but her reputation and demeanor had already earned his trust. At that, the ghost set forth, turning to head downhill and towards the caves he’d mentioned earlier, not intending to waste a moment longer than he had to.

Days. Of course it would take days to search through everything. Athena held back a sigh. On the outside the mountains were huge, but those lacking the proper understanding of the land feature would miss the obvious advantage of living in such a place. There were numerous places to hide, explore, stash things, but unlike her pack mates she had tries to avoid the caves, even as a pup. While her brother had been running through them, jumping from rock to rock and weaseling through the smallest of passages she had been hiding outside or bidding to her fathers demands. She wished those small, dark spaces didn't make that feeling of unease grow inside her stomach. It made her feel weak and useless. What good was she if she couldn't face a cave? Maybe now was her change to grow and fight back these fears.
"My brother used to explore the caves, he told me there were all sorts of hidden spots and places to run, but I never paid attention to what he said." She felt shame at these words, but they were the truth. Ares was always boastful and annoying, he had been a thorn in her side with his show boating but she couldn't be proud of how she treated him. Perhaps if she had been kinder...no, she couldn't think about the what ifs. It would drive her crazy. "I've heard some others whisper about the possibilities of finding water in the caves, but no one has a solid lead. It's hard with how vast the networks are. We'll have to be careful." She said, following the direction of his muzzle.
His next words made her pause, something about him...being glad and his hope made something weird fluttering in her heart that she didn't understand. She ignored this feeling and nodded. "I'm glad as well. Doing this alone...well, it wouldn't be preferable, but we might as well start. The sooner we get to this the sooner we can hopefully be done." She said with a little laugh, taking a step towards the cave.
Thank you for being patient for my response!

The ghost was not overly excited about this current task, but that feeling wasn’t one he intended to dwell on. Some of the tighter caves made him feel claustrophobic, but those thoughts wouldn’t do either of them any good, he knew. It was better for his thoughts to be focused on the here and now, in the moment. He and Athena would need to keep all of their wits about them, for the task ahead. It was for the possible benefit of the whole pack that they were even doing this, and Hawk hoped such a sentiment would be enough to carry them through.
Athena spoke of her brother next, recalling some of what he’d once told her, but admitted somewhat wistfully that she’d never paid much attention. She’d also heard others speak of the possibility of finding water, but it didn’t appear anyone had any solid information. That was good to know for sure, even if it was what he’d been expecting. ”Your brother is right, from what little I’ve seen. We’ll be very careful, move slowly. Stay together, and if for some reason one of us can’t go on, we’ll leave together.” He hadn’t the intention of letting Athena go wriggling down some possibly narrow cave he couldn’t fit down, by herself, if he could help it.
”And if we do succeed, maybe we’ll be called heroes?” He spoke jokingly, throwing a wry smile and a wink toward the other for good measure. Glory meant nothing to him, and he doubted Athena cared much for it either. But it was fun to think about, for a moment. Athena agreed, as well, that she was glad not to be doing this alone. She was ready to get started, and so the ghost moved along a little faster. Only a slight dip in the landscape ahead revealed an otherwise inconspicuous looking cave, that ventured down who knew how far into the earth. ”Here we are. I’ll go first, so you can.. hear my steps, and maybe keep track of me better in the dark.” He spoke with a note of humor, reaching out to gently nudge the other with his nose in what he hoped was an encouraging fashion. ”May fortune be on our side.” Hawk added, setting forth with a confident stride after that, finding he was actually looking forward to the coolness of the cave.
He was.. by no means a cave exploration expert. But, the ghost felt confident enough in his ability to keep them safe. Even if that changed, though, he wouldn't let it show, for the sake of his packmate.

Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Molo
Thinking of her brother being right made Athena feel like her stomach was sick. Ares had so much potential, that's what their elders had whispered after the betrayal. It seemed like some were disgusted while others lamented about how they had lost such a strong warrior. Athena ignored it all. They didn't have to look into the face of people they loved while they tried to murder them. Athena took a deep breath, finding comfort in Hawks words of them being together.
"Heroes?" She replied with a little laugh, shaking her head. "Maybe they would call us heroes, the saviors of our pack." She joked back, though none of that mattered to her. She just didn't want to see more of her family suffer, she glanced to Hawk, part of her didn't want to see him suffer either. He was strong now, but there was nothing worse than watching someone you cared for waste away. They had to find water. She was determined, even if they didn't find it themselves, she wanted to try. Though, with her resolve to do something, there was still some worry in her chest, then he spoke again and she found solace in his decision to go first. It did give her some ease.
"I can hear you, but your fur makes it a lot easier to see you." She said, though there was a teasing smile on her maw, reaching out to tap her nose back against him before watching him as he strode to the cave. Watching him face it without looking back made her feel more encouraged. They could do this. She nodded, more to herself since he couldn't see and followed after him. "May fortune be on our side." She agreed and walked with him, staying close to his rear as the ground seemed to swallow them up. The darkness made a shiver run up her spine. We can do this, she thought, though the words in her mind didn't sound as confident as she had hoped. "We need to be careful to not get turned around, though I think some caves are marked to point us towards the dens." She said. With the pack living in these caves for ages, they had some fail safe's to ensure the least amount of wolves possible got hurt or lost their lives. Markings were dug into the ground pointing in different directions and some marking weather a tunnel was safe or not. Knowing these symbols would surely help the two in their quest.
I like their dynamic so far too ^^

And there it was. A little bit of spirit and humor, from his companion, at the notion of being labeled heroes, or saviors. ”Maybe all the packs, if we find enough,” he offered at that. It wasn’t a title he sought, and he certainly wasn’t doing this in hopes of being recognized as some sort of savior. The ghost was.. content with being just another dutiful pack member, as long as he knew he’d done his best. Although, Hawk supposed being called a hero was something that everyone dreamt of at least once, himself included. Especially when he’d been younger.
It would be easier for her to see him, too, Athena noted, echoing the statement about good fortune and providing a nudge of encouragement too, before they pressed forth. After only a dozen or so steps into the darkness of the cave, the heat began to dissipate, the air growing cooler the further they proceeded. The air itself smelled earthy, but dry, stale - not a trace of moisture to be had, yet. The tunnel itself was incredibly dark, making it impossible to pick out anything more than the faintest of details. Hawk kept a shoulder close to one side of the wall, just close enough for his guard hairs to brush against it on occasion, allowing that and his other senses to guide him forth, such as sounds or the feeling of the air shifting around him within the tunnel.
Athena’s presence, too, was a comfort - her voice echoing to him before long, providing a bit of advice. ”I didn’t know that. I’ve just.. been turning the same way, at any forks in the tunnels. So.. if I make three rights, I know it’s only left turns, to get back out. Or the opposite.” It had been a simple, but effective strategy, thus far. But knowing about the markings, and what tunnels already led somewhere, could certainly save time.
”Speaking of, I think we’re coming to a divide, now.” The air currents around him seemed to shift, and the ghost was fairly sure he could just make out two separate paths splitting off ahead of them. This time, the left one looked like it sloped downward at a greater angle, though Hawk elected to pause for a moment, and shift to the side so that his companion could come forth to possibly search for markings and voice her opinion on which direction to take, before he’d suggest anything.

Athena laughed a little, thinking of making such a discovery that could make them heroes to all the packs. Imagine something so life changing that it united three vastly different entities. It was a lofty idea, but then it was soured with the idea that such a thing could be used by her father to make him feel proud that his daughter did something so monumental. It made her want to throw up. She discarded the putrid thought and walked with Hawk, her eyes taking a moment to adjust to the darkness, even then it was a struggle to discern the safest path to walk, every step had to be careful with the risk of splitting open a paw pad on a sharp rock, but then Hawk spoke and she found herself distracted from her worries and refocused on the task at hand.
"That isn't a bad method at all." She told him, though she felt like she would easily lose track of where she was going, which made her admire his prowess even more. He was strong and compared to her and intelligent but also he wasn't forthright. He was humble from what she could tell and found herself admiring that trait. She paused at his mention of the divide. She stopped at his side and peeked out at both of the paths, frowning slightly. "Logic says water would be found farther down but I'm being honest the idea of going down like that makes me want to vomit."
Sorry for such short replies, my muse is lacking.

There was a soft laugh, from his packmate.. and perhaps for a moment, her thoughts wandered down the same path as his. The idea that something as simple as water could bring all of the packs together was a tempting one. Though, if what he’d heard of the Sanzin were true, it seemed just as likely a pack like that would end up wanting it all for themselves. It truly would be a conundrum, deciding whether or not to share something with the other packs if they were to find it. And at that moment, the white Knight was glad it was not a decision he’d have to make. At least not alone. Perhaps that was something that would best be decided by a vote.
To be told that his method wasn’t bad, too, felt like high praise from Athena. At that moment the ghost was glad for the darkness of the cave, which would at least partially conceal the prideful little smile he felt crossing his face at that moment. Though, he supposed he wouldn’t have been ashamed of the expression, anyway. ”I appreciate that,” he spoke with a quick glance to Athena, noting she’d taken to studying the paths.
Going down was indeed the logical choice, although.. Athena didn’t sound particularly fond of that. Although careful of his boundaries with anyone, Hawk let himself lean closer to his packmate as she spoke of her fears, pressing gently against her for a time. ”If you want to turn back, there’s no shame. But maybe.. try closing your eyes for a moment. Take a few deep breaths, and imagine we’re somewhere else.”
Hawk paused a moment, closing his eyes to both think of and picture a scene, himself. ”Like the ocean, or a lake, maybe. With soft, warm sand beneath our paws. Open-air all around, and a cool breeze coming from the blue water that stretches as far as our eyes can see. Maybe, we could even go there, if you want, sometime.” He could still recall his first look at the ocean. A magnificent, awe-inspiring scene, memories of which he’d never forget. He would not have minded seeing it again. And though they couldn’t drink the ocean water, going for a swim would be nice. But then another thought occurred to him.
”That is.. unless you don’t like.. places like that. If you don’t, uh.. ignore me.” Goodness, he hoped Athena did like those kinds of places, and that she wasn’t someone who hated beaches and sand.. like some he’d met before.

Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Molo
Athena took a deep breath, she couldn't give up so easily. The pack needed this, they needed everyone searching to the best of their abilities and giving up because she was afraid was not a valid excuse. She Hawk against her fur and for a moment she forgot to breathe, the air catching in her throat, she urged herself to regain her composure, not speaking until finally the air flowed in and out of her lungs. She tilted head head towards his and closed her eyes, trying to follow along with his words but as he mentioned the ocean, her brows furrowed.
The ashen wolf opened her eyes, "I've never been to the ocean, I've heard of it, but never been." She admitted, her life had been training and then...picking up the pieces after her family exploded. She hadn't had time to enjoy herself-with the exception of taking moments to goof around with Maxem, sometimes she wished he was her brother...perhaps life would have been kinder. "I would like to go someday, to the ocean, I mean." She added, someday when their pack wasn't struggling to survive with dry throats and cracking paw pads. As she thought of the two of them, she and Hawk, going to the ocean he was suddenly taking the words back.
She smiled, casting her gaze to him. "I wouldn't ignore you, even if you did manage to talk nonsense." She teased then reached out, nosing his cheek, "let's go down and see if we can find anything, if nothing is there, well, we can continue to look or call it day." She said kindly, even though it may have felt like they were in the cave systems for minutes, it could have been hours, they had no way to tell time in this place of darkness.
But you see, it's not me, it's not my family In your head, in your head, they are fightin'

In the closeness of the tunnels, the ghost could feel the breath of his companion as she calmed and steadied it, seeming to regain her composure and focus on the task ahead of them. But then, to his surprise, Athena admitted she’d never been to the ocean. It seemed strange, that she could reside so much closer to it than he had been, and not have seen it yet. Although, maybe such a thing shouldn’t have surprised him, given just how devoted the other Knight was to her duties.
But, it seemed as if the strategy had worked, at least a little bit. If only for a few moments, their thoughts were drawn elsewhere, and out of the stressful times in which they currently found themselves. The other professed that she would like to see it, he nodded, silently envisioning such a thing for himself, too. Turning to study his companion, the ghost could just barely see her in the darkness of these caverns, but Hawk was almost certain he could see a smile on her face. She professed that she wouldn’t ignore him even if she had thought his words were nonsense, a sentiment that warmed him a little. The slight touch added to that.
”When this is over, then, you pick the time, and we’ll go. I would like to see it again, too.” The thought of taking in that environment again was wondrous. Even more so, sharing it with someone else. A pretty female, at that, which was definitely a noteworthy first, too. The ghost couldn’t help but wonder, did that mean it qualified as something like… a date? The idea was both new and intriguing, something that surely demanded a more thorough, thoughtful examination, but at a later time.
”Down it is. Let’s see what we can find.” With a resolute nod and one last glance at his packmate, Hawk set forth again at that, slipping quietly through the cavern to follow the downhill path.

Athena
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Molo "Me? Pick the time? Then we'll never go." She said with a laugh, looking over at him with a teasing glint in her eyes. "I make myself too busy to to have time for anything, though maybe this will be the thing to break that habit." She mulled over the thought, feeling some positivity as she considered the future. Maybe by then they would have water and the pups would be safe and she would allow herself to take some time off and enjoy life but then again what was her life if she wasn't focused on her training or her duties as a Knight? Her ear twitched, now was not the time to think about that. Those plaguing thoughts will wake her up in the middle of the night.
While lost in her thoughts Hawk had moved ahead and her side where they had once touched now felt cold, sending an unpleasant shiver up her back. he feeling made her kick herself into action and she hurried after Hawk, not wanting to get lost in this cavern, the darkness had a way of engulfing even the lightest colored of wolf. "Hopefully we find something quick." She teased, catching up to his side.
As they descended the air felt like it was getting heavier, weighing down her fur with the darkness and though it felt damp she still was unsure if they were on the right path but then a slight trickling sound reached her. Her ears pitched forward. "Wait," she stopped moving, "do you hear that?" She asked, wondering if she was hearing things out of her desperation.
But you see, it's not me, it's not my family In your head, in your head, they are fightin'

Though it was with a laugh, Athena did bring up a good point about why maybe she shouldn’t pick the time. It was a fair statement though, and perhaps one of the few differences between them. Hawk liked to think of himself as dutiful and devoted to his pack and role, but he did always make sure to take time away from that, too. It was important, in his view, that someone should have time to relax and enjoy themselves. To have fun. Life wasn’t just about packs and jobs, after all.
”Fair enough. I am sure you will like it. If the pack, and this situation looks like it’s going to turn out alright, I can pick the time. We should plan on a few days, for it, too.” That seemed an appropriate amount of time to both make the journey, and actually have time to enjoy the area, for a while. Simply envisioning standing upon the beach again provided much-needed motivation to keep going, as the other suggested.
He was uncertain how far they’d gone when his packmate was telling him to stop, bringing the ghost to an almost immediate halt. One front paw hovered over the ground while his ears turned forth. Indeed, he did hear what sounded like water. ”I think so,” he murmured quietly, beginning to step forth again once he was sure he was hearing something.
The sound grew louder as he pressed forth, and then suddenly the wall against his side was damp, slick with moisture that trickled down from somewhere in the rock wall above. It seemed to continue flowing down to some unseen point further off in the cave, although.. the tunnel ahead also grew smaller, which would indicate their chances of being able to follow it to any kind of a pool were rather unlikely.
”Water… we found some,” Hawk breathed, casting an excited glance toward his packmate. It wasn’t much. Not anywhere near enough to supply a whole pack, but it did at least lend some credibility to this theory that maybe a larger source could be found, with enough searching. Which meant their efforts and exploration weren’t in vain.
